New series „International Relations and World War I“!!

We’re happy to announce our first event of the series „International Relations and World War I“. In one week, on the 3rd of December 2024, we‘re starting off by addressing the causes of the conflict.

Who was responsible for the outbreak of World War I? This question, first raised during the war, remains contentious more than a century later. Not only which country and individuals deserve blame, but also whether the construct of war guilt is of any utility remains hotly disputed amongst political scientists and historians alike.

A century filled with publications has also led to some utterly absurd arguments. Was everything Britains fault? Did nations go to war to prevent women from gaining the right to vote? Why were ex Nazis the biggest proponents of German guilt? Were the German and Russian emperors actually peace loving hippies, manipulated by their warmongering ministers?

The presentation „Foggy Roads to Armageddon: An Introduction to a decade of war guilt debate“ from our Vice-Chairman Josef Mlejnek gives an overview of the historiographic debate, its development over time and discusses some of the more outlandish theories that have developed as a result.

The presentation will take place on Tuesday (3rd December) in the seminar room 120 at the University of Jena (Carl-Zeiss-Straße 3  07743 Jena), starting at 18:15!

We’re looking forward to see you! And stay tuned for more!!
